  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 2 cups pecans, chopped
  • 3/4 cup melted butter, divided
  • 1/2 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 (14-ounce) bag caramels, unwrapped
  • 1 1/3 cups water
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 (18-ounce) box German chocolate cake mix

Directions:

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 13×9 inch baking pan.
  2. Prepare Cake Batter: In a large mixing bowl, prepare the cake mix according to the package instructions, using the water, oil, and eggs. Mix until smooth.
  3. First Layer: Pour half of the cake batter into the prepared baking pan, spreading it evenly.
  4. Bake First Layer: Bake the first layer in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. Once done, remove it from the oven and set it aside to cool slightly.
  5. Melt Caramel: While the cake layer is cooling, place the unwrapped caramels, 1/2 cup of the melted butter, and the evaporated milk in a double boiler. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly until the caramels are fully melted and the mixture is smooth.
  6. Add Toppings: Pour the melted caramel mixture evenly over the cooled cake layer. Sprinkle 1 cup of the chopped pecans and all of the chocolate chips over the caramel.
  7. Second Layer: Pour the remaining cake batter over the caramel and chocolate chip layer, spreading it evenly with a spatula.
